Our Denomination

Since its origin on the American Frontier in the early 1800's the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has attempted to increase respect and understanding among Christian believers of all denominations. Attempting to hold true to the teachings of Jesus and the practices of the New Testament churches, it strives for a Christian faith which is both socially relevant to the era in which we live and intellectually sound. Many couples from differing church backgrounds have united their home by membership in the Christian Church because it allows them to bring their own personal faith together around the one central idea of faith in Jesus Christ. The following list is a sampling of some of the most significant of our common beliefs:

• We believe that the Old and New Testament Scriptures form the basis of our Christian thoughts and actions.

• We recognize the principle of self-government for each local congregation with the regional and general bodies serving in advisory capacities only.

• We observe the Lord's Supper, or Holy Communion, every Sunday, and welcome all Christians from all denominations to participate.

• We practice baptism by immersion, a New Testament practice recognized as the most adequate symbol of complete surrender and of the biblical ideal of death, burial, and resurrection to new life.

• We accept previous forms of baptism from other communions of faith.

• We participate in and encourage interdenominational fellowship of Christians in worship, study, mission and service. 

When you present yourself for membership at South Broadway, we ask only one question:
"Do you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and do you accept Him as your personal Savior and Lord?"
